Artist Statement
My name is Ho Ling Sum, and I am a student at Hong Kong Baptist University. As a child, I loved drawing and was especially drawn to illustration. I once believed that aesthetics was the most important element of art—that art existed primarily to be admired. Since studying art, however, my understanding has broadened. I now see that art is not only about beauty; it can also provoke thought, spark creativity, and deepen our cognition. As a result, my work no longer pursues beauty and realism alone. I explore a range of media, convinced that different ideas call for different materials to achieve their most effective expression. I enjoy challenging myself by experimenting with everything from natural clay found in the environment to everyday objects like wire. I also avoid confining myself to a single mode of making, working across sculpture, mixed media, and community art to express my ideas more freely. My practice is grounded in daily observation and personal experience. Through my artwork, I aim to surface overlooked aspects of everyday life and invite viewers to pause, notice, and reflect.
